Commando monument, Spean Bridge

'United we Conquer'
The cast-iron monuments at Spean Bridge feature three Commandos looking south towards Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. The Commandos were formed on the orders of Winston Churchill in 1942. Volunteers came from all Regiments of the Army, Royal Marines and Allied Forces, including the US Rangers. The training centre to train elite hand-picked Commandos between 1942-5 was based in the harsh terrain at Achnacarry Castle, a few miles away. Training was arduous, drilled by Royal Marine instructors, and carried out in the rugged Lochaber countryside. The sculpture was erected in memory to WW2 personnel who trained in the area. It was unveiled and dedicated by the Queen Mother in 1952. Adjacent to the monument is a Memorial Garden, the resting place of the ashes of former Commandos. About a mile away, the Spean Bridge Hotel hosts a small, interesting exhibition of Commando documents and artifacts.
