Benromach story

Scoobie, the Benromach distillery cat

When Gordon and MacPhail of Elgin bought the mothballed Benromach distillery at Forres in 1993, it had been closed for 10 years and stripped of equipment, although the building had utilities supplied and cat-flaps for Scoobie, the distillery mouser.

Forres resident and Gordon and MacPhail employee (the late) Donald Ferguson checked on Scoobie every evening, making sure that he had food and milk in his bow(e)ls. The heater beside his bed in the office was kept on during the winter months. As well as eating all the mice, Scoobie was fed at several local houses, before curling up by their fires. And they say it's a dog's life.

Gordon and MacPhail's Managing Director George Urquhart kept a photo of Scoobie on his desk.
