North Bridge over Foveran Burn

North Bridge over Foveran Burn

Newburgh residents can only save a crumbling historic crossing from demolition by raising up to £500,000 to replace it. At the Formartine Committee on 28th April 2015, councillors - who have overseen the deterioration of the North Bridge over the Foveran Burn, allowing it to fall into disrepair and eventually closing it in January 2015 - decided that the dilapidated structure was no longer fit for purpose. There's corrosion on the handrail posts and cracks on the decking panels and platforms.

Aberdeenshire Council took over North Bridge in 1996 since when nothing has been spent on its maintenance. Offers by the community to help with refurbishment were turned down on health and safety grounds, although the Council will consider alternative measures to its removal. The footbridge was gifted to Newburgh in 1902 by one of village's most famous sons, Captain Thomas Fiddes Spalding.
