Waves from Cransdale, Collieston

On the rocky coastline north of Collieston in a creek between Old Slains Castle and Cransdale, is a deep pool called St Catherine's Dub. Folklore has it that here is the site of the 1588 wreck of the Santa Catarina, a Spanish Armada galleon. Guns, a sea-chest and anchors were recovered from this creek in the 19th century.

But only four wrecks of Spanish vessels were recorded in Scottish waters, none on the Buchan coast. No ship of that name sailed in the Armada. There is no record of St Catherine's Dub prior to 1858. It is a likely corruption of an earlier place-name, the original Caterans' Dub (robbers pool).
